KUALA LUMPUR: For the second consecutive year, Anugerah Juara Lagu has acknowledged an indie band.

Lagu Untukmu was named Best Song at the 23rd edition of TV3's annual song competition at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil last night.

The number, sung by indie band Meet Uncle Hussain, and written and composed by band members Tass and Lass, also came up tops in the Pop Rock category.

The band received RM37,000 and two trophies for this entry.

Last year, Estrange took home the award with the upbeat number Untuk Kamu.
Sampai Syurga, sung and written by Faizal Tahir and composed by Audi Mok, won in the ballad category. They walked away with RM12,000 and a trophy.

Faizal also won the best performance and best vocal awards, receiving RM10,000 in prize money for each category. All in, Faizal received RM32,000.

In the Ethnic Creative category, Persoalan Cinta came out tops. Composed by Julfekar with lyrics by Ku Seman and Izza Rosley, the composition beat two entries, Dusta Berkalang and Doa Dalam Lagu.

The prizes were presented by the wife of the deputy prime minister, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Media Prima chairman Datuk Abdul Mutalib Mohamed Razak, Media Prima's Television Networks chief executive officer Datuk Seri Ahmad Farid Ridzuan and TV3 chief executive officer Datuk Amrin Awaluddin attended the event.

AJL 23, which kicked off the music calendar for this year, was hosted by Ally Iskandar, Cheryl Samad and Faizal Ismail.

The event, themed "Music Illumination", saw performances by M. Nasir, Jamal Abdillah, Jaclyn Victor and Gang Starz 2 champion One Nation Emcees.

AJL 23 was carried live by TV3 with live streaming via HotFM and www.tv3.com.my.
